Identification of dissolved organic matter size components in freshwater and marine environments

چکیده

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the transition zone from freshwater to marine systems was analyzed with a new approach for parameterizing size distribution of compounds. We used size-exclusion chromatography molecular analysis and quantified colored DOM (CDOM) on samples two coastal environments Baltic Sea (Roskilde Fjord, Denmark Gulf Gdansk, Poland). applied Gaussian decomposition method identify peaks chromatograms, providing information beyond bulk properties. This complements methods where is separated into classes pre-defined filtering cutoffs, or chromatograms are only infer average weight. With this method, we extracted between three five each chromatogram clustered these groups. To test applicability our linked decomposed salinity, major environmental driver freshwater-marine continuum. Our results show that when moving low-salinity waters, observed steep decrease apparent weight mostly due loss high-molecular-weight fraction (HMW; >2 kDa) CDOM. Furthermore, most CDOM absorbance originates HMW DOM, whereas absorbing moieties more equally distributed along smaller range (< 2 samples.

Photochemical and microbial degradation of dissolved lignin phenols: Implications for the fate of terrigenous dissolved organic matter in marine environments

[1] Molecular level characterizations of dissolved lignin were conducted in Mississippi River plume waters to study the impact of various removal mechanisms (photooxidation, microbial degradation, and flocculation) on dissolved organic material (DOM) concentrations and compositions. Prior to analysis, dissolved (<0.2-mm pore size) samples were size fractionated by ultrafiltration into high mole...

Experimental Evidence for Abiotic Sulfurization of Marine Dissolved Organic Matter

Dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) is the largest pool of organic sulfur in the oceans, and as such it is an important component of the global sulfur cycle. DOS in the ocean is resistant against microbial degradation and turns over on a millennium time scale. However, sources and mechanisms behind its stability are largely unknown. Here, we hypothesize that in sulfate-reducing sediments sulfur is a...

Microbial Community Structure Affects Marine Dissolved Organic Matter Composition

Marine microbes are critical players in the global carbon cycle, affecting both the reduction of inorganic carbon and the remineralization of reduced organic compounds back to carbon dioxide. Members of microbial consortia all depend on marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) and in turn, affect the molecules present in this heterogeneous pool. Our understanding of DOM produced by marine microbes...
